Milestone Safety Achievement: 1,000 Days LTI-Free

Kinetic Well Services Ltd is proud to achieve 1,000 days with no Lost Time Injuries.

Kinetic Well Services Ltd (Kinetic NZ) achieved 1000 days Lost Time Injury (LTI) free on 1 December 2016. NZ General Manager, Aaron Green credits the achievement to the strong safety awareness and culture of the Kinetic NZ team. Employees are conscientious and proactive in creating and ensuring a safe work environment. They place importance for the responsibility of workplace safety on every member of the team.

“Safety must come first, and I believe there is no reason we can’t have an injury-free workplace. Our team have really embraced this approach, understanding incidents not only impact our work, but importantly, family and home life too”, said Aaron.

Our cloud based reporting software has been instrumental in ensuring workplace safety at the site.

“We have very good controls in place to prevent accidents or reoccurrence of incidents across the business, and we are continuously looking at ways to reduce risk where we work. This has been critical in achieving this safety milestone”, Aaron added.

Kinetic NZ have implemented several initiatives to achieve this excellent safety milestone, including:

  • Strong processes which encourage pro-active and conscientious behavior;

  • Safety responsibility culture – both collective and individual;

  • Active participation in clients HAZOPS & SIMOPS;

  • Regular observation and hazard reporting;

  • Regular auditing, reporting and monitoring;

  • ICAM and TapRoot cause analysis to understand the root cause of any incident;

  • Embracing the “Right to Stop Work” authority for unsafe situations;

  • Conscience effort to continuously improve safety performance; and

  • Dynamic and specific HSE communication across the business.

MPC Turns Tooth Fairy for Rural Queenslanders

MPC's commitment to supporting regional Queensland was further strengthened this month, with the company donating $10,000 to the QCoal Community Dental Service through the QCoal Foundation.

QCoal Foundation uses company donations like MPC’s to help fund a range of initiatives including the dental service which is run by the Royal Flying Doctor Service in a purpose-built mobile dental surgery, providing emergency and preventative dental care for people living in rural and remote Queensland.

MPC CEO John Smith said QCoal Foundation's travelling dental service was a tremendous initiative and was pleased that MPC was able to play a part in delivering much-needed oral health care for country Queenslanders.

"More than 6500 rural Queenslanders with limited access to health care services have already benefited from this free dental service since it was introduced in 2013 by the
QCoal Foundation," Mr Smith said.​

"Those patient figures alone confirm that the initiative is a success, but it also shines the light on the very real need for dental services in rural Queensland, and is why MPC is so pleased its donation will help this worthwhile initiative to continue," Mr Smith said.

Mental Health App for FIFO Workers Takes Top Honours at QMC Awards

An innovative App developed by a Queensland construction company to gauge the mental health and wellbeing of its 900 FIFO workers, has been recognised by the industry at this year's Queensland Mining Contractors Awards.

The MPC Group was announced the winner of the 'Staff Engagement Category' at the Awards, which were held in Mackay this week as part of the Queensland Mining Expo.
Award judges were impressed with the App's ability to survey the company's entire FIFO workforce each swing to ascertain overall wellbeing, and enabling the company to take affirmative action or provide counselling help to workers if needed.

The easy-to-use App, called Mate Check, takes two minutes to complete during flights in and out of project sites, and through the simple click of a button, workers can confidentially access counselling assistance from recognised organisations - such as Mates in Construction, Beyond Blue and Lifeline.

Accepting the award, MPC Group Social Performance Manager Glenn Pfluger, said the company's Mate Check App had been in use since 2015 and had been overwhelmingly welcomed by the company’s workforce.

“Our crews have totally embraced this new App technology and through it have given us valuable mental health feedback and also thousands of suggestions on ways the company can improve worker wellbeing on site, in camp and even at home,” Mr Pfluger said.

“To win this award is absolutely fantastic, it’s a real honour to be recognised by the industry, and particularly so for work being done in industry mental health which, up until recent times, probably did not receive the focus it deserved.

“While I thank the QMCA for the win and the industry for its recognition, I think the real thanks must go to our crews who for the past two years have actively, and at times very honestly opened up when using the Mate Check mental health survey each swing.

“It's thanks to this honest feedback about their own mental health, that we are now getting a much clearer picture of how they are feeling, but most importantly, being able to implement strategies to improve their wellbeing,” he said.

Mr Pfluger said while having an in-depth insight into your workforces' wellbeing through the Mate Check App was a tremendous outcome, the fact that more than 60 of the company's employees had sought counselling assistance using the App over the past two years, was quite sobering.

“It's very sad to think that a number of our people needed to seek help over the past two years, but I am bouyed by the fact that we've put something in place for them to easily access help when needed, rather than leaving them feeling like they have to work through it in isolation.

“It's a telling sign of the impact of mental stress on workers, particularly those on FIFO rosters, and I believe indicative that no part of our industry is immune to this health issue,” he said.

MPC Presence Remains on APGA Board

MPC will continue to have a presence on the Australian Pipeline and Gas Association Board, with the re-election of Mr Tony O’Sullivan at the Association’s Annual General Meeting in October.

Mr O’Sullivan, MPC’s Executive General Manager Australian Construction, was voted in for a further two-year term on the APGA Board.

Mr O’Sullivan said as an APGA Board member, he would continue his strong advocacy for continuous improvement within the industry, particularly around gas policy and the strategic importance gas pipelines play in the energy mix.

“I take a very active interest in the development of Australia’s gas and pipeline industry
and am of the resolute opinion that it is the best in the world,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“But like any industry, it needs to be continually at the forefront of advancement and improvement to ensure prosperous longevity.

“Which is why I am buoyed by the robust and intelligent industry conversation, that all APGA members are participating in, and I believe it is this collaborative effort that will position our pipeline and gas industry well for the future,” he said.

In addition to re-election to the APGA Board, Mr O’Sullivan will also continue his role as the APGA Treasurer.
